Learning Abroad: Addressing Academic Rigor and Deeper Learning with Effective Pedagogies

Date:

Wednesday, November 4, 2009

Time:

12:00-1:30 pm

Location:

Maryland Room, Marie Mount Hall

Abstract:

Short term study abroad courses represent special opportunities for students for learning while experiencing the richness of travel to a foreign different country. To help faculty optimize this student learning in UMD taught study abroad courses the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Study Abroad Office will jointly host a workshop on pedagogical approaches for teaching short term study abroad courses.

In this hands-on workshop faculty will discuss how to ensure academic rigor and deeper learning in short team study abroad courses, how technology can be used to create community, and what works and things to avoid.  Experienced study abroad faculty will be present to share advice and insights. Staff from the Study Abroad office will be available to answer questions and provide guidance for faculty who would like to establish or restructure a study abroad course.
